Challenge 6: Not only 10k but a trail run!

Never listen to me when I say I am not going to do something…especially when I am relatively vociferous about it!

It generally means that I am going to backtrack completely and change my mind!

This challenge is proof of that, it is also proof that I am easily influenced, don’t do my research and prone to biting off more than I can chew.

I signed up for this: (click it…there is info…but come back!)

Angmering Bluebell Trail Run

OK… the introduction may seem a tiny tiny bit over dramatic…but you have to bear 2 things in mind…

I can’t yet run 10k and this is on 27th April…in fact I can’t even continuously run 5k!

I have never run a trail run before!

Me right now!! (yes I am now LEGO!)

I got completely carried away because a friend of mind Dan signed up for the 10 mile version of this race, skip read the information and signed up before I had second thoughts. Mainly because I thought it looked pretty!

I realise now that I completely misread the word “trail” as “train” which makes sense if you are local as there is a railway near here (but probably not actually in Angmering) called the Bluebell Railway. SO what I thought was a run on some paths near the bluebell railway…which must be quite flat…railways are generally flat in the UK… turned out to be a trail run that is described as undulating from the start!

Runners world described it like this:
10k quote

Tough 10k!! Sting in the tail!! See the LEGO face above!!

So my challenge is to complete the run, to run as much of it as possible and I would really love not to come last…but am not holding my breath.

Of course I am not holding Β my breath…that really wouldn’t help!!

I have started preparations…I have found an app that is similar to the c25k but takes you from beginner to 10k in 14 weeks.

I have 11 weeks until the race. But I am fairly sure I am better than the run 1 min walk 1.5 min first weeks. So I am going to start on week 4 and see how I go!

Quite frankly I am terrified and I just want to make a good enough attempt at it that the race officials don’t have to wait for me before they close the course.

Ok…I am also quite looking forward to it and am pleased to have something to train for πŸ˜€

I will (of course) keep you posted on both training and the event!

So I got the spoiler on Facebook last week, but it doesn’t dampen my HUGE EXCITEMENT for you! 10K is a big, big deal, Sam. I will be cheering you on every step of the way. Kinda wish I could be in England to do it with you. πŸ™‚

Which app did you download for the training?

    • Ice_Badger says :

It is exciting πŸ™‚ and I will be more excited with a but more training under my belt and when the shock if realising I misread all the information wear off! I would love it if you could be here to do it!
      damn continental separation!
The app is called 10krunner by clearsky apps

      • nancytex2013 says :

You do your training running outside/ in the park, right? Is the trail terrain much different? If so…ooops! πŸ™‚

        I’ll check the app out!

      • Ice_Badger says :

The park I normally run in has Tarmac type paths around it so it not very trail-y the path I sometime run on is a bit more like trail so I will have to run there more…the hills worry me most everywhere I run is really level! And one bit that goes across an uneven field. I will be ok I think πŸ™‚
The app seems pretty good but doesn’t seem to record your distance just your time unless I have missed something. This is slightly disappointing as it was a paid for app! But it has good training runs on it which is good. I started today in week4 day 1 which as it turns out was quite easy πŸ˜€

      • nancytex2013 says :

        that’s weird that it doesn’t calculate distance… especially if training for a 10k. πŸ™‚

I know you can do this!

      • Ice_Badger says :

That is what I thought! I will have to investigate further!

Thank you πŸ˜€ it is really great I have your support πŸ˜€

      • nancytex2013 says :

p.s. I just got home from my Barre class. My husband asked me how it went. I told him I am unlikely to be able to walk tomorrow. Or have sex again. Ever.

      • Ice_Badger says :

        Hahahahahahahaha! Oh. Dear πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      • nancytex2013 says :

Now the real trick will be motivating myself to go back from the pre-paid for sessions 2 through 5. Now I know what it’s about, so it’s no longer an unfounded fear. Now it’s a real dread. πŸ™‚

      • Ice_Badger says :

Oh dear! It is prepaid so that is a motivation! It will be better the second time I am sure πŸ˜€

      • nancytex2013 says :

        HA! Not!
On the positive side of things, as I was putting my shoes on and getting ready to leave the instructor came up to me and told me I did really well. I snorted (laughing) and said it didn’t feel like it. She said that first timers typically don’t engage the right muscle groups but that I had really good control. So that part felt good to hear. Sam, I can’t even begin to describe the amount of involuntary shaking my legs were doing. I looked like I had a serious problem… πŸ™‚

      • Ice_Badger says :

That is awesome πŸ™‚ that is a really good sign! I am sure you will improve quicker than you think!
I have read about it and I would love to try it but the merest place is London which would take me a couple of hours to get to 😦

      • nancytex2013 says :

Pure Barre is the franchise that started the whole thing, but I think there are a number of other ‘off-brand’ barre classes. Maybe there’s one nearer to you? I’d love to hear what you think of it. It was brutal!

      • Ice_Badger says :

I will investigate tomorrow! The most likely place is Brighton which is possible πŸ™‚

      • nancytex2013 says :

Misery loves company …get on it!

      • Ice_Badger says :

By the way I have found another 10k app which I am going to try too called Run a 10k by red rock apps

  2. totalfitpt says :

I feel slightly bad about influencing you on this one, but at the same time I have no control over your reading!!!!!!! I know you will do alright as once you put your mind to something you are incredibly determined! We shall celebrate together at the end!!!! πŸ™‚

    • Ice_Badger says :

It is entirely my own fault really…I skip read things all the time!
I signed up because it looked pretty and was on a weekend I wasn’t already doing somehting πŸ˜€

I look forward to celebrating…you can wait for me as you will probably finish your 10 miles quicker than I do my 10k! πŸ˜€
