Day 287: I valiently fought a battle with the morning

And I lost 😦

I am sorry, I know I said I would do the early thing every day, but it just didn’t work!

I am hoping this kitten will in some way make up for the fact that I didn’t get up…It also serves as an illustration of how I felt!

I tried, I got up as I said I would at 6am, I went to the bathroom and spent a good 15-20 mins arguing with myself (in my head, obviously) about working out…after all I was up already. The problem was, my body/subconscious brain were of the opinion that 5.5 hrs of sleep were not enough and the opportunity of another hour of recuperation time was not to be passed up…so to my shame I caved in and went back to bed!

and spent the rest of the day feeling guilty and resolving to do better tomorrow.

now for the good πŸ™‚

Knowing how much I still have to do on wedding cakes and suchlike, I resolved to run at lunchtime thus keeping the whole evening free πŸ™‚ This time I stuck to my resolution and made it out in my break to complete week 5 day 2 of my 10k training!

It was a hard run, but not an awful run. I am still not getting through these whole 10 minΒ intervals. I am definitely switching apps for my next run when I will have more time Β and trying more, shorter intervals.

This run, however, was the opposite of my last one, with me improving in the middle / end of the run rather than the start. This could have been something to do with the gradient profile of the run…

look…gradient profile…looks like a hill…albeit a small one…

(oooh get me “gradient profile”…I meant it was more uphill slopey on for the first half and downhill slopey on the way back…)

Or it could just be because I am not very consistent in my running…

Whatever the reason, I was happier, struggled less and ran for more of the last 2 intervals than I did the first one.

it was not quite as long as Mondays, and not quite as quick but still respectable (for me πŸ™‚ ) we will just have to see what happens in the different interval pattern.

The most comical part of the run was the scene of me arriving back at my work building trying twice to pull open the push door… only to be caught up with the Operations Director of my company who was slightly sarcastic (in a nice way) about it…

My brain does not work well after running…

You have A LOT going on. Choosing to get 6.5 hrs sleep instead if 5.5 was smart. No guilt!

    • Ice_Badger says :

that is what I decided in the end πŸ™‚

I am having a rethink of the challenge at the moment…I still want to do it, but it is going to take a bit more than just having enough will power to get up!

      • nancytex2013 says :

Maybe pick a number of days per week that are your early workout days. It doesn’t need to be all 5, right?

      • Ice_Badger says :

that is what I am thinking, 3 days including my PT day is a good start I think. and I have to get up earlier because I don’t work well if I haven’t had time to wake up first so maybe slightly earlier but go to the gym as it is near work, so less early mornings but a more substantial work out on those days to make it worthwhile!

      • nancytex2013 says :

That sounds like a good plan. If you don’t get enough restful sleep, eventually it will catch up to you.

      • Ice_Badger says :

that is what I am finding.

I don’t really get enough sleep as it is, so just cutting out an hour a day is not working!

I need to work on going to bed at a sensible time too, but there is just so much to do in the evening!

I can’t shake the feeling that sleep feels like a waste of time, despite knowing logically that this is ridiculous!

      • nancytex2013 says :

I have read a bunch of research lately that speaks to the need for 7-8 hours to drives peak performance. They also say that getting consistently less than that will not only prevent you from doing your best, but also will end up hurting your health. Everything from illness to lowering your brain function to depression. I take this stuff seriously! So I try to get at least 7 hours a night. If course there are bust periods when I’ll get a lot less, for several days in a row, but eventually I will get a catch up night and sleep for 9-10 hours. It all balances itself out. πŸ™‚

      • Ice_Badger says :

I have read them too, I rarely scrape 7 hours, especially if you take into account the number if times I am restless / wake up during the night!

I think that should be my challenge, to do morning workouts, but to make sure if I am getting up at 5:30 I am in bed by 10:30!

        that will be a chellenge!!

      • nancytex2013 says :

yeah, it seems I’m fairly restless too. If I’m in bed for 8 hours, I’m lucky to get 7:15 of actual sleep. Definitely try to prioritize on getting more sleep, Sam — I think it will have a big impact on your life.

      • Ice_Badger says :

I think you are right πŸ™‚

I also keep forgetting that I have restless legs, which is classified as a sleep disorder and it is that that causes me to wake up a lot and I need to be in bed longer to combat it!

I know the logic..I just get sidetracked and forget to go to bed!

      • nancytex2013 says :

set an alarm on your phone – one that tells you to go to bed! πŸ™‚

      • nancytex2013 says :

or – drink a shot of whiskey at 10:00 pm. you’ll be out by 10:30, for sure. πŸ˜‰

      • Ice_Badger says :

        haha yes!

I have alarms on my phone for all sorts of things…it is my external memory!
        I will set one!
