Well, the January challenges anyway…as I don’t think the universe will let me have a redo for the whole month…
Anyway…my Janathon and my 31 days of yoga fell by the wayside a little… and by a little, I mean a lot… there have been some extenuating circumstances involving some crazy stuff, which I am not going to go into, and I got hit by The Cold!
you know The Cold…the one that is going around that comes with such a bad sore throat that you think you have regrown your tonsils just so you can have tonsillitis…
Yes I know…it sounds like a bucket of excuses…but it isn’t…and I haven’t been idle, I have still gymmed and danced and walked, I just haven’t followed a rigorous every day plan…
Hehe sorry about all the selfies…only I am not really sorry because they are actually good for self esteem and suchlike!
Ok, time for the positive… 3 years ago, even last year probably, not completing this every day challenge would have me worrying about failing, it would have me apologising on here and worrying about losing all the fitness I have built up. However I am not doing any of that.
I have realised that I have come so far in this lifestyle change that a “failure” to do yoga every day or to post on FB in the Janathon group is not going to derail me. I am not going to lose what I have gained just by taking two rest days in a row…especially if they are rest days due to illness!
I am still going to go to the gym and walk and dance and generally be active because it is part of me…it is not what I do it is who I am. I genuinely love it too much to just stop!
I don’t need 30 day challenges to keep me on track, that doesn’t mean I won’t do any ever again because I genuinely think some of them are beneficial… I just don’t rely on them any more 😀
That being said, I am going to restart the Yoga challenge because I really believe yoga will do me good!
Look at me…I developed a grown up attitude O_O when did that happen!!
Oh and in other news…I started a new blog… one full of the adventures of our little red VW van…so apparently i am a travel blogger now too…
Go look and follow me!! (shameless plug…sorry)
OK…it is the start of a brand new year…
Traditionally I am supposed to do a round up of 2016 and a goals and whatnot post for 2017…well I am not going to yet..or possibly not at all…I will tell you goals as I set them…but new year is not the only time you can set them…it is just the time people seem to.
I had just got through telling myself that I didn’t need to sign up to do 30 days of this and a month of that because my lifestyle incorporates a lot of exercise and suchlike when I saw a FB post about Janathon so I thought ooooh maybe I will do that again just because I can…
Then I went and looked at the Yoga with Adriene YouTube channel, and noticed that she is doing a new 31 day yoga program which started on 1st Jan called Yoga revolution. It is 31 days of yoga (obviously) but also something about mind body connection and getting them working together and suchlike…
so I thought what the hell…I’ll do that…it might just do me some good…
so…I have done Day 1: Ease and day 2: Intention so far 😀 I have so far remembered that I like yoga…and that it is hard, even when you think it will be easy!!
If you want to join me it isn’t too late you could catch up I am sure!! just click here:
Insane in the brain!
If you follow my Real Fitness Sussex blog, you will know that I totally stole the title of this blog from there but it is appropriate and I am not one to let go of a good pun or 90s music reference!
(Mind you…I have just read the lyrics to the song Insane in the Membrane, they make no sense!)
Time to get back to the point…
what was the point?
Oh yes the craziness that was the day that contained my Insanity Instructor workshop!
The madness began with me being woken by my alarm at 4:30 am (yes really 4:30!!) and me rebelling against it and not getting up for another 15 mins! But still dragging myself out of bed at 4:45 on a Friday morning is definitely lunacy of the highest order!
I banged around and floundered my way through cat feeding and coffee making and threw together a Skyr, chocolate protein and orange smoothie for breakfast and somehow managed to leave the house without forgetting anything! After only a small amount of getting lost I picked up my friend and fellow certifiable instructor, and set off for Southampton!
The reason for this inhumanly early start was that it takes 2 hours at least to get to Southampton, and the workshop was set to start at 8am!
8am?? They expected me to be energetic at 8am?? This did nothing to ally my fears about the possibility of my dying on this course! Or, if not actually dying, then looking very stupid and being told to go away and come back when I was fitter and looked more like an insanity instructor should!!
Apparently I was not the only one…Sarah has similar (totally unfounded) fears and it turns out the way to forget about these fears and just get on with the course is to take a friend with you…a policy I shall be employing as much as possible in future!!
Ok…back to the point…(I nearly used the anyway gif again but am showing restraint…honest)
We arrived without major incident at EasyGym Southampton and even found a parking space near the door in case of serious jelly legs after the course.
This is Easy Gym Southampton, it shares a building with the post office, they are separate inside though, don’t worry you don’t have to run on the conveyor belts leaping parcels and whatnot! I didn’t even know that the Easy people did gyms, I learned something even before my course kicked off!!
Once we had found our way through the giant gym to the relatively small studio where we were having our course, we met our fellow participants, who were a mixture of Yoga practitioners, body builders, strength training aficionados and insanely bouncy PE teachers. We also met our improbably pretty, enthusiastic and Australian Insanity Instructor and Beachbody Master trainer! Much to the annoyance of those out there who want to write people off as stereotypes, the participants and the trainer were lovely people who didn’t seem to be judging my lack of typical trainer looks at all 😀
At least if they were, they didn’t show it which was nice of them 😉
The other interesting thing about this course was not everyone on it had done Insanity before! At least I knew what I was letting myself in for a little bit!
Predictably, the very first thing we did was a whole Insanity Live Round 16 class 😀
I was dreading it, I thought I would be the worst in the class, and collapse and not be able to do it…
I forgot 2 things,
- I have done Insanity and Insanity Max 30 and have coped with both f them…
b) I am much fitter than I used to be…
iii) I LOVE Insanity!!
Ok…that was three things…shhhh!!
About half way into the first block of the workout, so about 8 mins in…I remembered that I wanted to do this course because I really enjoy the workouts!! I wasn’t forced into it, I knew what I was getting into and I blooming love the workouts even thought they are hard…
…Possibly because they are hard!!
After I remembered this, the whole course was a lot more fun and a lot less scary!
And what is more, I wasn’t noticeably less fit than others, I was less bouncy than some and less bendy than others but not ridiculously out of my league 😀
After we had gone through the whole class, we were taught how to break the class down and teach it. The class has a warm up, 4 blocks, a dig deeper challenge and a cool down/stretch. Each of the blocks consists of a set of 4 exercises which you do for 30s each three times over with a power move at the end of the block. We were taught how to teach the blocks effectively and safely, and we were shown what to focus on in each repetition. We were also given pointers on how to take legitimate breaks in the blocks (by giving modifications and moving round checking on form etc) so we could look like we weren’t broken at the end!
It is important, as an instructor to look like you can at least complete the class 😉
We practiced each of the moves individually and teaching the blocks to each other in groups. I was very much fun, but I feel I lost the plot a little (a lot…) towards the end when we had to do the second round of the block where we have to say what we want them to do, how we want them to do it and why: I actually used the motivational phrase ” go deeper for some reason!”
I suspect I am going to have to come up with something better than that when I do this for real!
All in all it was a fun day, despite getting soaked on the way to find coffee…
coffee is essential, no mere rain will stand in my way!!
and the most important outcome of the day was we all passed 😀 we can now call ourselves Insanity Live Instructors and teach actual people the actual work out 😀 woohoo!!!
It was, as I have said, and awesome day, and another one of those “If you told me I 3 years ago that I would be doing this I would have laughed…” moments!
The down side of the day was the fact that my car broke down on the way home and left the two of us stranded on the side of the road…twice…for 5 hours… I am trying not to focus on that though!!
Last day of January, last day of janathon but of course it isn’t the last day of exercise 🙂
I just may not tell you about it every day!
It was Sunday, so of course Pilates happened 🙂
I was a participant today, not the teacher 🙂
Janathon 2016 done
Hi, super quick post!
In the interests of increasing my flexibility and mobility after being told by several seperate people that I am imbalanced and lack mobility in certain areas, I decided to do a bit more yoga. This is also an attempt to fix my super tight legs so I don’t wake up every morning feeling like I have walked 10miles overnight!!
Janathon day 30 done 🙂
Ok…so I didn’t post yesterday, it was totally because I forgot but as well as that, I didn’t take any pictures at dancing so the post would literally be me saying… I did dancing…it was awesome 😀
Yesterday, I did dancing, and it was awesome!
Oh and I had a sports massage and got told I have lots of bits I need to fix :-S and that I need to work in my flexibility!
This morning I went to my new gym, and tried a session training with my new trainer… It seems like it is going to be awesome!!
We did deadlifts (conventional and sumo), front and back squats, strict and push presses and some extra stuff. The consensus of opinion is I need to work on my flexibility!
I am looking forward to this new training! It is going to be very lifting focused which will make me happy…and strong!! 😀 I will write a m film list about it in due course, when I have done a bit more of it!
The main thing I am takin away from the last 2 days is…
I need to stretch more and work on my flexibility
Janathon days 27 and 28 Done 🙂
The day I want to 2 different gyms but didn’t do much in either of them…
First I went to the new gym I am trying out and spoke to one of their trainers about having some training. I am still in search of a way to break my plateau that I will be able to sustain… Fingers crossed this will work 🙂
This is the gym
It is much less scary than the other two new strength training gyms I have tried, despite the fact that is is on an industrial estate 🙂
The second trip to the gym started well with a warm up and some squats and split squats but then I inadvertently nearly broke my husbands toe by making him do a split squat and his foot fell off the bench and slammed into the floor…
This put paid to the second gym trip…
However I did do something which is better than nothing 🙂
After the insanity if the weekend I decided to forgo the craziness today and do some more yoga!
Yep I did today in my multicoloured doc marten branded socks made especially to make breaking in your DMs easier!!
I don’t think hey enhanced the yoga, but they didn’t hinder it and my feet stayed toastie!
Today’s choice of yoga was hard work! There is an outside chance that I should have redone the beginner one…
Never mind it was still good and this woman is still fun and not annoying 😀
Today’s yoga pose that made me giggle was hedgehog pose! It was all curled up like a hedgehog! I feel sure I did not look as elegant as a the Adrienne of yoga with Adrienne, or as cute as a curled up hedgehog while doing it mind you!!
Janathon day 25 done 🙂
Pilates… With a difference!!
But this week I was a litre busy to take pictures…busy beng the instructor 😀
Yes that’s right I was cover g the Pilates class! I wasn’t covering it with Pilates I was covering it with a hybrid of super sow conditioning circuit training Pilates inspired moves…
I can’t teach actual Pilates after all!!
It was fi and the people in the class were all lovely and said they liked it so that is good 😀
I wasn’t mean enough to cover it with insanity but the way…I think they would have stopped being lovely at that point!!
Janathon day 24 done 🙂
Well that is what I did yesterday!
Mythago led another wassail this time in Steyning Community Orchard. The traditional waking up of the trees and scaring off of evil spirits took place last night in order to attempt to ensure a bumper Apple crop this coming year!
Well it can’t hurt can it 😀
And it was a lot of fun!
We place toast soaked in cider in the branches of the trees so that the evil spirits stick to them and are carried far away by birds!
And of course there was dancing 🙂
Of course there was dancing…this was a Mythago event dancing is what we do!
There were also very fetching blue overshoes to stop us tracking mud inside after the event 😀
